OCG 2021.01 Metagame Report #1

Welcome to Week #1 of the OCG 2021.01 format.

This report will tabulate 40 top-performing decks from 8 tournaments that were held in Japan and China Mainland during 1 – 6 January 2021.

Update: Revised with additional data from “Cardo Duel Club Store Opening Tournament”.

Virtual World

Kinnikuso (きんにくそ) went 7-2 and finished 3rd in “2nd Tsubo CS” which had 64 participants.

He ran the exact same build as last week, except swapping 1 Evenly Matched for 1 Droll & Lock Bird in the Side Deck. This standard build is still performing well.

Eldlich

Kyororo (きょろろ) went 8-1 and finished 1st in “2nd Tsubo CS” which had 64 participants.

His Main Deck is focused on going first, running the minimal ‘hand traps’ of 3 Maxx “C” and 3 Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, and opting for Counter Traps such as Solemn Judgment and Solemn Strike. The Solemn Counter Traps are more impactful than ‘hand traps’, but comes with a significant risk of being a liability when going second.

His Side Deck is packed full of ‘hand traps’, ready to be swapped over when he is unable to choose to go first.

Prank-Kids

Namuru (ナムル) went 7-0 and finished 1st in “170th Oretachi Trading Card Club CS” which had 46 participants.

He ran 3 There Can Be Only One in the Main Deck.

There Can Be Only One is effective against a variety of the top decks as they are predominately made up of a single monster Type. Eldlich would be unable to Special Summon Conquistador of the Golden Land and Huaquero of the Golden Land while Eldlich the Golden Lord is on the field as they are all Zombie. Zoodiac would be unable to Xyz Summon as they are all Beast-Warrior. Virtual World are Psychic or Wyrm, Thunder Dragon are Thunder, Code Talker and Salamangreat are Cyberse.

Prank-Kids themselves are slightly affected as each Prank-Kids Effect Monster has a corresponding Fusion Monster or Link Monster with the same monster Type. However, with proper sequencing they could adjust their combos and maneuver around the overlapping monster Types.

Conclusion

Virtual World, Eldlich and Prank-Kids share the top spot this week, while Chaos Thunder Dragon, Code Talker, Dragonmaid and Phantom Knights close in behind.

PSY-Framegear Gamma is very heavily played in the current format. A good amount of Prank-Kids, Virtual World, Chaos Thunder Dragon and Dragonmaid builds are currently running PSY-Framegear Gamma directly in the Main Deck. Playing around PSY-Framegear Gamma is something to keep in mind.
