OCG 2017.01 Metagame (1 Jan – 31 Mar 2017)

The limitation of Speedroid Terrortop and Fire Formation – Tenki impeded Zoodiac momentarily, but Maxmimum Crisis happened.

Zoodiac

Maxmimum Crisis gave Zoodiac two additional Xyz Monsters – Zoodiac Hammerkong and Zoodiac Chakanine, further improving their already absurd 1-card combos.

However, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring was the true game-breaker of the format. Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring‘s ability to negate effects that interact with the Main Deck not only hurt the consistency of many decks, but also outright stop decks that are reliant on a certain key card to function (e.g. That Grass Looks Greener). This gave Zoodiac an absolute edge in the competitive scene.

  • Zoodiac Drident – 3 → 0
  • Zoodiac Barrage – 3 → 0
  • Zoodiac Ratpier – 3 → 1
  • Fire Formation – Tenki – 1 → 2

The merciless OCG 2017.04 Limit Regulation ensured that the reign of Zoodiac came to an end.

After the limitation, Zoodiac Thoroughblade is still a 1-card Normal Summon that can become a ATK 2800 monster with the ability to direct-attack. A concept that I had been toying with is using Zoodiac in a Meta Beat type of control deck to go for direct attacks, while locking down the opponent with traps such as Quaking Mirror Force. Unfortunately, the deck performs poorly against Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King.

True Draco

The powerful Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King had a really strong debut, but he was still vulnerable to Kaiju.

Zoodiac were siding Interrupted Kaiju Slumber with an assortment of Kaiju, and together with the Ghost girls, they were able to keep Master Peace and his True Dracos in check.

Untouched by the OCG 2017.04 Limit Regulation, and with the New Master Rules placing a constraint on Extra Deck monsters, True Draco is currently the deck to beat at the dawn of the OCG 2017.04 format.

Conclusion

Out of all 537 decks, 337 were Zoodiac decks, and 169 were decks running with Zoodiac engine. Only 31 decks were not running any Zoodiac.

In total, Zoodiac was played in 94.23% of the decks.

People love Zoodiacs in OCG 2017.01.
