Konami was too optimistic with the OCG 2016.01 Forbidden and Limited List.

While Performage is gone, Performapal Dracoslayer continues to reign supreme in the OCG 2016.01 format, retaining its 59% share of the metagame.

With a total of 404 top placing decks from 31 competitive Japanese tournaments, here is the final metagame breakdown of the OCG 2016.01 format.

Performapal Dracoslayer

Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer

Performapal continues to dominate with the aid of Dracoslayer, representing almost 60% of the metagame.

The Performapal trinity (Pendulum Sorcerer, Skullcrobat Joker, Monkeyboard) together with Draco Face-Off gave Performapal Dracoslayer incredible consistency, while the Pendulum mechanic allows recurring of resources.

An opening with a combination of Number 38: Hope Harbinger Dragon Titanic Galaxy, Traptrix Rafflesia, or Naturia Beast and a set Solemn Strike is often unbreakable for many decks.

  • Performapal Monkeyboard – 3 → 0
  • Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer – 3 → 1
  • Performapal Skullcrobat Joker – 3 → 1
  • Luster Pendulum, the Dracoslayer – 3 → 1
  • Ignister Prominence, the Blasting Dracoslayer – 3 → 1
  • Lavalval Chain – 3 → 0
  • Draco Face-Off – 3 → 1
  • Wavering Eyes – 3 → 1

The massive hit to Performapal finally ends its dominance.

Burning Abyss

Players have been tinkering with various new combinations of Speedroid and Phantom Knights with Burning Abyss, but Burning Abyss was still no match for Performapal Dracoslayer.

  • Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss – 3 → 1
  • Tour Guide From the Underworld – 3 → 1
  • Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss – 3 → 1
  • Mask Change II – 3 → 1

Although Burning Abyss has been hit by the OCG 2016.04 Forbidden and Limited list as well, the overall metagame is slowing down, making the Speedroid Phantom Knights variant a popular deck choice in the new OCG 2016.04 format.

Monarch

Aither_the_Heaven_Monarch

The Super Quantum (Ex0) variant is the more successful build. Using Emergency Teleport or Super Quantum Red Layer does not use up the once-per-turn Normal Summon, making them much more reliable than Edea the Heavenly Squire.

The deck performs poorly after side-decking as the opponent would bring in Mask of Restrict. Additional Mystical Space Typhoon and Twin Twisters also meant that Domain of the True Monarchs becomes less effective.

  • Domain of the True Monarchs – 3 → 1
  • Pantheism of the Monarchs – 3 → 1
  • Emergency Teleport – 3 → 1

Surprisingly Monarch continues to see some play in OCG 2016.04, with the Brilliant Fusion variant being more popular.

Conclusion

The OCG 2016.04 Forbidden and Limited List finally shuts down Performapal, hitting Burning Abyss and Monarch as well.

In the new slower format, Speedroid Phantom Knights Burning Abyss takes a strong lead, while Blue-Eyes follows closely behind.
