Metalfoes Zefra

The OCG 2018.04 format saw Metalfoes build rising in popularity among Zefra decks, even overtaking the traditional Dragon Shrine build.

This article will showcase two 2-card combo opening for Metalfoes Zefra.

Combo 1: Metalfoes Goldriver + Zefraath

Any of the following combination works for this combo:

  • Metalfoes Goldriver + Zefraath
  • Metalfoes Goldriver + Oracle of Zefra
  • Metalfoes Goldriver + Zefra Providence
  • Painful Decision + Zefraath
  • Painful Decision + Oracle of Zefra
  • Painful Decision + Zefra Providence

Painful Decision adds Metalfoes Goldriver to hand, while Oracle of Zefra or Zefra Providence adds Zefraath to hand.

  1. Play Zefraath in the Pendulum Zone.
  2. Activate the Pendulum Effect of Zefraath, add Zefraniu, Secret of the Yang Zing from Deck to Extra Deck face-up, and change Zefraath‘s Pendulum Scale to 7.
  3. Play Metalfoes Goldriver in the Pendulum Zone.
  4. Pendulum Summon Zefraniu, Secret of the Yang Zing from the Extra Deck to the Left Extra Monster Zone.
  5. When Zefraniu, Secret of the Yang Zing is successfully summoned, trigger its effect to add Oracle of Zefra from Deck to Hand.
  6. Activate Oracle of Zefra, add Ritual Beast Tamer Zefrawendi from Deck to Hand.
  7. Activate the Pendulum Effect of Metalfoes Goldriver, destroy Zefraath and set Metalfoes Fusion from Deck.
  8. Normal Summon Ritual Beast Tamer Zefrawendi.
  9. When Ritual Beast Tamer Zefrawendi is successfully summoned, trigger its effect to add Zefraath from Extra Deck to Hand.
  10. Using Zefraniu, Secret of the Yang Zing + Ritual Beast Tamer Zefrawendi, Link Summon Heavymetalfoes Electrumite.
  11. When Heavymetalfoes Electrumite is successfully summoned, trigger its effect to add Astrograph Sorcerer from Deck to Extra Deck face-up.
  12. Activate the effect of Heavymetalfoes Electrumite, destroy Metalfoes Goldriver, then add Astrograph Sorcerer from Extra Deck to Hand.
  13. After Metalfoes Goldriver is destroyed, trigger the effects of Heavymetalfoes Electrumite and Astrograph Sorcerer, forming a Chain.
    Chain 2: Resolve Astrograph Sorcerer‘s effect, Special Summon itself from Hand to 5th Main Monster Zone, then choose and add Metalfoes Goldriver from Deck to Hand.
  14. Chain 1: Resolve Heavymetalfoes Electrumite‘s effect, draw 1 card.
  15. Activate Metalfoes Fusion, using Metalfoes Goldriver + Zefraath from Hand, Fusion Summon Metalfoes Mithrilium to 1st Main Monster Zone.
  16. Using Heavymetalfoes Electrumite + Metalfoes Mithrilium, Link Summon Summon Sorceress to Left Extra Monster Zone.
  17. When Summon Sorceress is successfully summoned, trigger the effect of Metalfoes Mithrilium, Special Summon Metalfoes Goldriver from Graveyard to 1st Main Monster Zone.
  18. Activate the effect of Summon Sorceress, target Metalfoes Goldriver to Special Summon PSY-Framegear Gamma from Deck to 3rd Main Monster Zone.

  1. Using PSY-Framegear Gamma + Summon Sorceress, Link Summon Crystron Halqifibrax to Left Extra Monster Zone.
  2. When Crystron Halqifibrax is successfully summoned, trigger its effect to Special Summon Glow-Up Bulb from Deck.
  3. Using Glow-Up Bulb + Metalfoes Goldriver, Synchro Summon Denglong, First of the Yang Zing to 3rd Main Monster Zone.
  4. When Denglong, First of the Yang Zing is successfully summoned, trigger its effect to add Nine Pillars of Yang Zing from Deck to Hand.
  5. Activate the graveyard effect of Glow-Up Bulb, send the top card of the Deck to Graveyard, and revive itself from the Graveyard.
  6. Using Glow-Up Bulb + Astrograph Sorcerer, Synchro Summon PSY-Framelord Omega to 1st Main Monster Zone.
  7. Activate the graveyard effect of Metalfoes Fusion, shuffle it into the Deck, then draw 1 card.

  1. During the opponent’s turn, when the opponent activates a card or effect, activate Nine Pillars of Yang Zing to negate the activation, and destroy Denglong, First of the Yang Zing.
  2. When Denglong, First of the Yang Zing leaves the field, trigger its effect to Special Summon Zefraniu, Secret of the Yang Zing from Deck.
  3. Activate the effect of Crystron Halqifibrax, banish itself to Special Summon Formula Synchron to the Left Extra Monster Zone.
  4. When Formula Synchron is successfully summoned, trigger its effect to draw 1 card.
  5. Activate the effect of Formula Synchron, using Formula Synchron + Zefraniu, Secret of the Yang Zing to Synchro Summon Baxia, Brightness of the Yang Zing to Left Extra Monster Zone.
  6. When Baxia, Brightness of the Yang Zing is successfully summoned, trigger its effect to shuffle 1 card on the field back into the Deck.

This is a 2-card combo that draws 3 cards and puts out 3 disruptions:

  • PSY-Framelord Omega to banish 1 random card from the opponent’s hand until your next Standby Phase.
  • Nine Pillars of Yang Zing to negate a card or effect activation.
  • Baxia, Brightness of the Yang Zing to shuffle a card back into the Deck.

Combo 2: Metalfoes Silverd + Zefraath

Any of the following combination works for this combo:

  • Metalfoes Silverd + Zefraath
  • Metalfoes Silverd + Oracle of Zefra
  • Metalfoes Silverd + Zefra Providence
  • Painful Decision + Zefraath
  • Painful Decision + Oracle of Zefra
  • Painful Decision + Zefra Providence

Painful Decision adds Metalfoes Silverd to hand, while Oracle of Zefra or Zefra Providence adds Zefraath to hand.

  1. Play Zefraath in the Pendulum Zone.
  2. Activate the Pendulum Effect of Zefraath, add Zefraniu, Secret of the Yang Zing from Deck to Extra Deck face-up, and change Zefraath‘s Pendulum Scale to 7.
  3. Play Metalfoes Silverd in the Pendulum Zone.
  4. Pendulum Summon Zefraniu, Secret of the Yang Zing from the Extra Deck to the Left Extra Monster Zone.
  5. When Zefraniu, Secret of the Yang Zing is successfully summoned, trigger its effect to add Oracle of Zefra from Deck to Hand.
  6. Activate Oracle of Zefra, add Ritual Beast Tamer Zefrawendi from Deck to Hand.
  7. Activate the Pendulum Effect of Metalfoes Silverd, destroy Zefraath and set Metalfoes Fusion from Deck.
  8. Normal Summon Ritual Beast Tamer Zefrawendi.
  9. When Ritual Beast Tamer Zefrawendi is successfully summoned, trigger its effect to add Zefraath from Extra Deck to Hand.

  11. When Heavymetalfoes Electrumite is successfully summoned, trigger its effect to add Astrograph Sorcerer from Deck to Extra Deck face-up.
  12. Activate the effect of Heavymetalfoes Electrumite, destroy Metalfoes Silverd, then add Astrograph Sorcerer from Extra Deck to Hand.
  13. After Metalfoes Silverd is destroyed, trigger the effects of Heavymetalfoes Electrumite and Astrograph Sorcerer, forming a Chain.
    Chain 2: Resolve Astrograph Sorcerer‘s effect, Special Summon itself from Hand to 5th Main Monster Zone, then choose and add Metalfoes Silverd from Deck to Hand.
  14. Chain 1: Resolve Heavymetalfoes Electrumite‘s effect, draw 1 card.
  15. Activate Metalfoes Fusion, using Metalfoes Silverd + Zefraath from Hand, Fusion Summon Metalfoes Mithrilium to 1st Main Monster Zone.
  16. Using Heavymetalfoes Electrumite + Metalfoes Mithrilium, Link Summon Summon Sorceress to Left Extra Monster Zone.
  17. When Summon Sorceress is successfully summoned, trigger the effect of Metalfoes Mithrilium, Special Summon Metalfoes Silverd from Graveyard to 1st Main Monster Zone.
  18. Activate the effect of Summon Sorceress, target Metalfoes Silverd to Special Summon PSY-Framegear Gamma from Deck to 3rd Main Monster Zone.

  1. Using PSY-Framegear Gamma + Metalfoes Silverd, Synchro Summon Denglong, First of the Yang Zing to 1st Main Monster Zone.
  2. When Denglong, First of the Yang Zing is successfully summoned, trigger its effect to add Nine Pillars of Yang Zing from Deck to Hand.
  3. Using Denglong, First of the Yang Zing + Summon Sorceress, Link Summon Crystron Halqifibrax to Left Extra Monster Zone.
  4. When Crystron Halqifibrax is successfully summoned, trigger the effects of Crystron Halqifibrax and Denglong, First of the Yang Zing in a Chain.
    Chain 2: Resolve Crystron Halqifibrax‘s effect, Special Summon Glow-Up Bulb from Deck.
  5. Chain 1: Resolve Denglong, First of the Yang Zing‘s effect, Special Summon Zefraniu, Secret of the Yang Zing from Deck.
  6. Using Glow-Up Bulb + Astrograph Sorcerer, Synchro Summon PSY-Framelord Omega to 1st Main Monster Zone.
  7. Activate the graveyard effect of Metalfoes Fusion, shuffle it into the Deck, then draw 1 card.

  1. During the opponent’s turn, activate the effect of Crystron Halqifibrax, banish itself to Special Summon Formula Synchron to the Left Extra Monster Zone.
  2. When Formula Synchron is successfully summoned, trigger its effect to draw 1 card.
  3. Activate the effect of Formula Synchron, using Formula Synchron + Zefraniu, Secret of the Yang Zing to Synchro Summon Baxia, Brightness of the Yang Zing to Left Extra Monster Zone.
  4. When Baxia, Brightness of the Yang Zing is successfully summoned, trigger its effect to shuffle 1 card on the field back into the Deck.

This is a 2-card combo that draws 3 cards and puts out 3 disruptions:

  • PSY-Framelord Omega to banish 1 random card from the opponent’s hand until your next Standby Phase.
  • Baxia, Brightness of the Yang Zing to shuffle a card back into the Deck.
  • Nine Pillars of Yang Zing to negate a card or effect activation.

Conclusion

Oracle of Zefra and Zefra Providence can only be activated once per turn. If you had activated Oracle of Zefra at the start to add Zefraath to hand, then for Step 6 you should add Zefra Providence to hand instead and that would still allow you to add Ritual Beast Tamer Zefrawendi to hand.

Combo 1 is better than Combo 2, as Combo 1 allows you to destroy Denglong, First of the Yang Zing for Nine Pillars of Yang Zing, instead of having to destroy Baxia, Brightness of the Yang Zing. Hence if you open with Painful Decision, it is better to add Metalfoes Goldriver so you can go for Combo 1.

For Summon Sorceress, other than the main synergy with Psychic-Type monsters, the deck also has a slight synergy with Spellcaster-Type monsters. In Step 16, Summon Sorceress could be Special Summoned to the Right Extra Monster Zone, positioning itself against Astrograph Sorcerer. This would allow Summon Sorceress‘ effect to target Astrograph Sorcerer and Special Summon Effect Veiler from Deck. Effect Veiler + Astrograph Sorcerer can be used to Synchro Summon Supreme King Dragon Clear Wing.

      Haha, perhaps. But a lot more people were asking about Zefra combos due to them being relatively niche. Only a few could understanding what I was writing about in the weekly reports without detailing out the combos.

    would u talk about zefraxa. it gives u the option to make electrumite without the normal summon in that 2 card combo. its also possible to trigger twice in the same turn (once from the hand when u destroy zefraath and later from the gy when u destroy oracle) and it can help u play thru disruptions and hand traps and act like an extender.

    also the special summon u get from oralce when u fuse mithrilium since it’ll let u summon any monster u drew from electrumite, or one u couldn’t normally pendulum like a gamma or bulb.

      Zefraxa is hard once per turn. Which means you can only use “this” effect of Zefraxa once per turn. Since the from hand and the from grave effect are stated as one effect, “this” means, that you can only use this effect once per turn, either summoning it from the grave, or the hand.

    What do you think about the viability of the Metalfoes Engine without Denglong in the TCG ? Sooner or later, Crystron Needlefiber and Summoning Sorceress (sad for europe) will get their TCG releases. But I highly doubt, that we will get back Denglong. Any suggestions on alternative Combo paths or engines for that case ?

    Can you make a combo article for Pendulum Magicians? They are an extremely combo oriented deck, and they have been worthy of one for a while now since they were the most represented deck of the last format and still have meta representation this format.
