OCG 2024.07 Metagame Report #0

Welcome to Week #0 of the OCG 2024.07 format.

This report tabulates 91 top-performing decks from 21 tournaments that were held in Japan, China Mainland and South Korea during 25 – 30 June 2024, played under the new OCG 2024.07 Limit Regulation.

Untouched by the new OCG 2024.07 Limit Regulation, Fiendsmith Yubel continues to be one of the top contenders in the new format.

As Droll & Lock Bird continues to see heavy play, the 2 Dark Beckoning Beast, 1 Chaos Summoning Beast and 3 Opening of the Spirit Gates remains a popular ratio to run. Some players even trimmed Dark Beckoning Beast to 1 just to minimize the impact of Droll & Lock Bird.

Duston (ダストン) went 7-0 (excluding 1 bye) and finished 1st in “Reonan Cup 3v3 Team Tournament” which had 26 teams (78 participants).

Snake-Eye has been further weakened by the OCG 2024.07 Limit Regulation, Snake-Eye Ash became limited and Bonfire became semi-limited.

The common change is the increase of Snake-Eyes Poplar from 2 to 3 as a replacement for losing 1 Snake-Eye Ash. The deck is more reliant on using the Fiendsmith combo to access the Snake-Eye cards, by using Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal effect to send Snake-Eye Ash from deck to the graveyard, and then reviving with Promethean Princess, Bestower of Flames effect.

Dangomushi (ダンゴムシ) went 8-1 and finished 1st in “1st Utsunomiya CS” which had 62 participants.

Rescue-ACE has also adopted the Fiendsmith package as their core build. Similar to Snake-Eye, the Fiendsmith combo could access the Rescue-ACE cards by using Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal effect to send Rescue-ACE Hydrant from deck to the graveyard, and then reviving with Promethean Princess, Bestower of Flames effect. Since the Fiendsmith combo doesn’t use up the Normal Summon, Rescue-ACE Hydrant effect could be used to search for Rescue-ACE Air Lifter which could then be Normal Summoned.

Rescue-ACE Hydrant by itself is also a starter now as it could go into the Fiendsmith combo. Normal Summon Rescue-ACE Hydrant and use its effect to add Rescue-ACE Preventer from deck to hand. Use Rescue-ACE Hydrant to Link Summon Linkuriboh, and then Special Summon Rescue-ACE Preventer by banishing Rescue-ACE Hydrant from graveyard. Use Linkuriboh and Rescue-ACE Preventer to Link Summon Moon of the Closed Heaven, and Rescue-ACE Preventer Trigger Effect would Special Summon Rescue-ACE Hydrant from banished. The Fiendsmith combo is used to go into Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal to send Rescue-ACE Turbulence from deck to graveyard, and then revived with Promethean Princess, Bestower of Flames effect.

Panda (パンダ) went 6-0-1 (excluding 1 bye) and finished 1st in “Reonan Cup 3v3 Team Tournament” which had 26 teams (78 participants).

Tenpai Dragon has been severely weakened with Sangen Summoning becoming limited, causing them to fall off significantly.

The Duke of Demise is a new Fusion Monster from Animation Chronicle 2024 and widens the coverage of Super Polymerization in the current format. The Duke of Demise uses 2 Fiend and/or Zombie monsters as Fusion Material, and is suitable against Fiendsmith Yubel, making Super Polymerization a removal for Fiends of different Attributes such as Unchained Soul of Rage (DARK), D/D/D Wave High King Caesar (WATER) and Fiendsmith Dies Irae (LIGHT).

Interestingly, The Duke of Demise ② effect might be relevant for Tenpai Dragon. The additional Normal Summon makes it possible to Normal Summon both Tenpai Dragon Paidra and Dora Draco on the same turn.

Lightning Storm in the Main Deck is a good metagame call against Rescue-ACE.

Makoto (真琴) went 8-1 and finished 1st in “15th Dark Law CS” which had 63 participants.

The preliminary week of the OCG 2024.07 format is fairly similar to the previous format. Yubel, Snake-Eye and Tenpai Dragon remains among the top contender, and Rescue-ACE is seeing a resurgence.

Fiendsmith has an overwhelming presence in the metagame. 50 out of the 91 decks that topped this week were running the Fiendsmith package. The top percentile decks Yubel, Snake-Eye, Rescue-ACE and Fire King are mostly running the Fiendsmith package.

However, as the Japan Championship 2024 and Asia WCQ 2024 are coming up, some players have chosen to withhold their deck lists, so we may not have the full picture of the new format.
