Purrely

Loo Wei Xuan (Duelist Cup 2022 Malaysia Champion) finished 5 – 8th in “Duelist Cup 2023 Malaysia” which had 217 participants.

Some players have been running Summon Limit in the Side Deck. If the opponent used Xyz Encore or Kaiju monsters to remove Expurrely Noir, then the monsters Special Summoned from the graveyard by Xyz Encore effect and Kaiju monster would count as 1 Summon by the opponent. While under Summon Limit, the opponent could only perform 1 more Summon for the turn.

Mathmech

Cheng Chi Hang went 7-2 and finished 5 – 8th in “Duelist Cup 2023 Hong Kong” which had 310 participants.

Solemn Scolding in the Side Deck is for countering any tech that the opponent could be running that could disrupt Mathmech Superfactorial from resolving successfully. Unlike Solemn Strike and Solemn Judgment which could only negate Monster Effects or Spells/Traps respectively, Solemn Scolding could negate both Monster Effects and Spells/Traps, allowing it to be used against D.D. Crow, Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion or Red Reboot.

Superheavy Samurai

Xinhai@EK (心海@EK) went 5-1-1 and finished 9 – 16th in “Duelist Cup 2023 China Mainland Beijing Regional Qualifier” which had 224 participants.

During the opponent’s turn, Crimson Dragon effect could be activated by targeting Superheavy Samurai Brave Masurawo, then it would return itself to the Extra Deck and Synchro Summon Hot Red Dragon Archfiend King Calamity from the Extra Deck. Hot Red Dragon Archfiend King Calamity effect would then make the opponent be unable to activate effects that activates on the field for this turn, a much more oppressive effect compared to Artifact Scythe.

Revolution Synchron could be searched out by Gear Gigant X, and is used to Synchro Summon Odd-Eyes Meteorburst Dragon, whose effect would then Special Summon Superheavy Samurai Prodigy Wakaushi from the Pendulum Zone. Revolution Synchron graveyard effect would Special Summon itself to the field and becomes Level 1, and together with Odd-Eyes Meteorburst Dragon they are used to Synchro Summon Accel Synchro Stardust Dragon, whose effect would Special Summon Superheavy Samurai Motorbike from the graveyard.

Activate Superheavy Samurai Prodigy Wakaushi Monster Effect on Chain 1, and follow with activating Accel Synchro Stardust Dragon effect on Chain 2. Resolving the Chain, Accel Synchro Stardust Dragon effect would Special Summon Stardust Dragon, then together with Superheavy Samurai Prodigy Wakaushi they would be used to Synchro Summon Crimson Dragon. Superheavy Samurai Prodigy Wakaushi Monster Effect would then Special Summon Superheavy Samurai Thief. Superheavy Samurai Motorbike and Superheavy Samurai Thief are then used to Synchro Summon Superheavy Samurai Brave Masurawo.

Xinhai has written a detailed thread in Baidu Tieba (决斗者杯预选赛—北京站 超重加速厄 瑞士轮0负 16强) with some suggested Bilibili channels for learning the opening combos.

Adamancipator

Lung Tin Yau went 8-2 and finished 3 – 4th in “Duelist Cup 2023 Hong Kong” which had 310 participants.

He ran 3 Revolution Synchron in the Main Deck, which provides a way to Synchro Summon Chaos Ruler, the Chaotic Magical Dragon, whose effect could be used send the top 5 cards of the deck to the graveyard.

Runick

Rurohan (ルロハン) went 5-1-1 and finished 1st in “3rd Tulio CS @ Nabe 3v3 Team Tournament in Ikebukuro” which had 33 teams (99 participants).

He ran 2 Sales Ban in the Main Deck and 2 Prohibition in the Side Deck, and has detailed their uses in his note (削り神碑のメモ(2023年4月制限)).

When going first, Sales Ban could be used to declare Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to ensure that his card drawing effects such as Runick Fountain, Card of Demise and Pot of Desires would resolve successfully. Sales Ban could also be used to declare Amano-Iwato to prevent it from returning to hand during the End Phase. Sales Ban only restricts activated effects, so Amano-Iwato Continuous Effect will continue to apply.

When going second against Mathmech, Sleipnir the Runick Mane would be Special Summoned first to banish itself and Firewall Dragon Darkfluid – Neo Tempest Terahertz until the End Phase, so that Cyberse Desavewurm graveyard effect cannot be activated. Sales Ban can then be used to declare Primathmech Laplacian.

Prohibition is used to declare Evenly Matched, Unending Nightmare and Cosmic Cyclone. Prohibition would stop multiple copies of the declared card, unlike Counter Traps which could only stop the first copy. It is not uncommon to have a Counter Trap stop the first Evenly Matched, but only to lose to the second Evenly Matched.

Conclusion

Week #7, #8 is the height of the World Championship 2023 qualifier.

May is the last chance for Japanese players to win a Shop Qualifier and earn their invite to the Japan Championship 2023 Area Qualifier. The 2019 World Champion Kosaka Kouki won his Shop Qualifier earlier this week with Adventurer Purrely [deck list].

Meanwhile in Asia, a total of 9 Duelist Cup 2023 major tournaments was held in these two weeks.

The metagame remains largely similar with Purrely and Mathmech in the lead, but the margin between them and the rest of the decks have narrowed.
