Maliss

Maliss received a hit in the OCG 2025.04 Limit Regulation with Maliss <P> Dormouse becoming limited. Most players are replacing with additional copies of Maliss <P> Chessy Cat to maintain the same amount of Maliss monsters in the Main Deck.

Dimension Shifter is the key card of this format as both Dragon Tail and Yummy relies on the graveyard for their gameplay and many Maliss build are now running it in the Main Deck.

Retaliating “C” in the Side Deck is specifically teched against Dragon Tail. The activation of Ketu Dragon Tail, Rahu Dragon Tail and Polymerization would all enable Retaliating “C” to be chained to them, causing the Fusion Materials to be banished instead of going to the graveyard, resulting in the Dragon Tail monsters be unable to activate their graveyard effects. Even if you have no monsters on the field when the opponent activates Ketu Dragon Tail, you can still activate Retaliating “C” in response. The relevant ruling is: When “Ketu Dragon Tail” is activated, can I chain with activating the effect of “Retaliating “C””?.

Artifact Lancea remains a key tech in the Side Deck against Maliss, which continues to be a top contender in the new OCG 2025.04 format.

Super Polymerization is a tech against Maliss and Yummy. Mudragon of the Swamp in particular is very effective against Yummy as their disruptions are targeting effects. Running Instant Fusion in the Main Deck to Special Summon Mudragon of the Swamp is Yusaku’s personal tech choice. Declaring and changing Mudragon of the Swamp to DARK Attribute would make the Maliss monsters and DARK Link Monsters become untargetable.

Dimensional Barrier could be used against most of this format’s top contenders, by declaring Fusion against Dragon Tail, Synchro against Yummy, and Xyz against K9.

The Black Goat Laughs is another option against Yummy, by declaring Yummy★Snatchy to shutdown their whole gameplan. Yummy★Snatchy fetches the Yummy Field Spell, enables Synchro Summoning during the opponent’s Main Phase and Battle Phase, and is also used as the Tuner Monster for Synchro Summoning the Yummy Synchro Monsters.

Yusaku (ゆーさく) went 7-1 and finished 1st in “1st Fuwadora Cup 3v3 Team Tournament” which had 38 teams (114 participants).

Dragon Tail

Dragon Tail is a new theme from Deck-Build Pack: Justice Hunters that is based around Fusion Summon. The Fusion Summon mechanic by default is negative in terms of card advantage as it requires 2 Fusion Materials and 1 Fusion Spell to Fusion Summon a Fusion Monster (turning 3 cards into 1). Dragon Tail recoups the card disadvantage by having the Dragon Tail Effect Monsters have a graveyard effect that sets 1 “Dragon Tail” Spell/Trap from deck when used as material for a Fusion Summon, and Dragon Tail Altharion effect could also retrieve monsters from the graveyard up to the amount used as Fusion Materials from hand.

Dragon Tail takes 2 – 3 cards to start their play, but would be able to quickly generate card advantage through their Fusion Summons. Dragon Tail Altharion could add any monsters from the graveyard to hand, and this could retrieve and reuse ‘hand traps’ such as Maxx “C” or Artifact Lancea.

A combo opening with Dragon Tail Lucias and a Monster Card is as follow:

  1. Normal Summon Dragon Tail Lucias.
  2. Dragon Tail Lucias ① effect, add Dragon Tail Fymena from deck to hand.
  3. Dragon Tail Fymena ① effect, discard itself as cost, Dragon Tail Lucias (on field) + Monster Card (in hand) → Dragon Tail Altharion.
  4. Chain 2: Dragon Tail Altharion ① effect, add Dragon Tail Fymena from graveyard to hand.
  5. Chain 1: Dragon Tail Lucias ② effect, Set Rahu Dragon Tail from deck to Spell & Trap Zone.
  6. Activate Rahu Dragon Tail, Dragon Tail Fymena (in hand) + Dragon Tail Urgula (from deck) → Dragon Tail Gramel.
  7. Chain 2: Dragon Tail Fymena ② effect, Set Dragon Tail Horn from deck to Spell & Trap Zone.
  8. Chain 1: Dragon Tail Urgula ① effect, Set Dragon Tail Flame from deck to Spell & Trap Zone.
  9. Dragon Tail Urgula ② effect, place itself on the bottom of the deck, add Dragon Tail Fymena from graveyard to hand.

The end board consists of 4 disruptions:

  • Dragon Tail Horn returns 1 Attack Position monster to hand/Extra Deck, then place 1 “Dragon Tail” card from graveyard or banishment on the bottom of the Deck to draw 1 card.
  • Dragon Tail Flame negates 1 face-up Spell, then place 1 “Dragon Tail” card from graveyard or banishment on the bottom of the Deck to draw 1 card.
  • Dragon Tail Gramel destroys 1 opponent’s card.
  • Dragon Tail Fymena Fusion Summons Dragon Tail Altharion to return 1 or 2 monsters to hand, or Fusion Summons Mysterion the Dragon Crown to banish 1 monster Special Summoned by Monster Effect.

The main disruption of Dragon Tail comes from their 2 Traps, Dragon Tail Horn and Dragon Tail Flame. Because Dragon Tail Horn and Dragon Tail Flame includes an effect that puts 1 “Dragon Tail” card from graveyard on the bottom of the deck, then draws 1 card, it can be negated by both Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion and Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. The relevant rulings are: When the opponent activates “Dragon Tail Horn”, can I chain with activating the effect of “Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion”? and When the opponent activates “Enma’s Judgment”, can I chain with activating the effect of “Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring”?.

Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion could also be used against Yummy to negate their Yummy Synchro Monster ② effect that returns itself to Extra Deck as cost to Special Summon 2 Yummy monsters from graveyard. Against Maliss, Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion could negate Maliss <P> March Hare ① effect, Maliss in Underground ① effect and Maliss <C> GWC-06. Since Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion could be used against the top three decks of this format, some builds are running them directly in the Main Deck.

Called by the Grave in the Side Deck is for the Dragon Tail mirror match. During your Main Phase, the opponent could activate Dragon Tail Fymena ① effect by discarding itself as cost to perform a Fusion Summon. Called by the Grave would be able to banish Dragon Tail Fymena from the opponent’s graveyard and negate its effect.

Wajii (わじぃ) went 7-0 (excluding 1 bye) and finished 1st in “25th Dacro CS ~2nd Anniversary~” which had 48 participants.

Yummy

Yummy is a new theme from Deck-Build Pack: Justice Hunters that is based around Synchro Summon, with a twist of being able to use a Link-1 Monster as a Level 1 Tuner Monster for the Synchro Summon of the Yummy Synchro Monsters. The Yummy Effect Monsters could be Special Summoned from hand while you control a Link-1 monster or a Level 2 Synchro Monster, allowing them to quickly amass on the field for their Synchro plays.

A combo opening with Cooky☆Yummy and a Card is as follow:

  1. Normal Summon Cooky☆Yummy.
  2. Cooky☆YummyYummy★Snatchy.
  3. Yummy★Snatchy ① effect, place Yummysment☆Minion from deck to Field Zone.
  4. Yummysment☆Minion ② effect, Special Summon Cooky☆Yummy from graveyard.
  5. Yummy★Snatchy + Cooky☆YummyCupsie★Yummy Way.
  6. Cupsie★Yummy Way ① effect, add Cupsie☆Yummy and Lollipo☆Yummy from deck to hand, discard 1 Card.
  7. Special Summon Cupsie☆Yummy from hand.
  8. Cupsie☆Yummy ① effect, add Yummy☆Surprise from deck to hand.
  9. Special Summon Lollipo☆Yummy from hand.
  10. Cupsie★Yummy Way + Lollipo☆YummyMartial Metal Marcher.
  11. Martial Metal Marcher ① effect, Special Summon Cupsie★Yummy Way from graveyard.
  12. Cupsie★Yummy WayYummy★Snatchy.
  13. Yummy★Snatchy + Cupsie☆YummyLollipo★Yummy Way.
  14. Lollipo★Yummy Way ① effect, Special Summon Cupsie☆Yummy and Lollipo☆Yummy from graveyard.
  15. Martial Metal Marcher + Cupsie☆YummyHerald of the Arc Light.
  16. Set Yummy☆Surprise.

During opponent’s turn:

  1. When opponent activates a card or effect, Lollipo★Yummy Way ② effect, return itself to Extra Deck as cost, Special Summon Yummy★Snatchy and Cooky☆Yummy from graveyard.
  2. Chain 2: Cooky☆Yummy ② effect, destroy 1 face-up monster opponent controls.
  3. Chain 1: Yummy★Snatchy ① effect, place Yummysment★Acrockie from deck to Field Zone.
  4. Yummy★Snatchy ② effect, Yummy★Snatchy + Lollipo★YummyCooky★Yummy Way.
  5. Chain 2: Cooky★Yummy Way ② effect, change up to 2 face-up monsters opponent controls to face-down Defense Position.
  6. Chain 1: Yummysment★Acrockie ① effect, destroy 1 card opponent controls.
  7. When opponent activates a card or effect, Cooky★Yummy Way ② effect, return itself to Extra Deck as cost, Special Summon Yummy★Snatchy and Cupsie★Yummy from graveyard.
  8. Cupsie☆Yummy ① effect, draw 1 card.
  9. Yummy★Snatchy ② effect, Yummy★Snatchy + Cupsie★YummyLollipo★Yummy Way.
  10. Lollipo★Yummy Way ① effect, Special Summon Cupsie☆Yummy and Cooky★Yummy from graveyard.
  11. Activate Yummy☆Surprise, return Cupsie☆Yummy, Cooky★Yummy and 2 cards opponent controls to hand.

The end board consists of 5 disruptions:

  • Herald of the Arc Light negates 1 Spell/Trap Card or Monster Effect.
  • Cooky☆Yummy destroys 1 face-up opponent’s monster.
  • Yummysment★Acrockie destroys 1 opponent’s card.
  • Cooky★Yummy Way changes 2 opponent’s monster to face-down Defense Position.
  • Yummy☆Surprise returns 2 opponent’s cards to hand.

Dinowrestler Pankratops in the Side Deck is a tech against Yummy. Special Summoning Dinowrestler Pankratops from hand does not create a Chain Block, and thus the opponent would not be able to respond with Herald of the Arc Light ② effect or the Yummy Synchro Monster ② effect. Dinowrestler Pankratops would be able to attack over Herald of the Arc Light, and its effect would be able to destroy Yummy★Snatchy when the opponent activates the ② effect and tries to Synchro Summon during your turn.

Evenly Matched is a tech against Dragon Tail. The two Dragon Tail Traps are against Monsters and Spells, and most of the Fusion Monsters that Dragon Tail could summon are against Monsters, so Dragon Tail has a weakness against Traps.

Anti-Spell Fragrance in the Side Deck is to protect your board against the opponent’s Dark Ruler No More as Yummy’s disruptions are frontloaded in their monsters on the field.

Huang Ke-Hsiang went 8-1 and finished 1st in “Spring Duel Festival 2025 CardMaster Shop Qualifier” which had 98 participants.

K9

K9 is a new theme from Deck-Build Pack: Justice Hunters that is based around Rank 5 Xyz Summon. K9 relies on the opponent to activate Monster Effects in their hand or graveyard, giving it a good matchup against Dragon Tail, but fares poorly against the other decks in the metagame.

K9 is more popular as a small ‘hand trap’ package consisting of 3 K9 – #17 Izuna, 1 K9 – #ØØ Lupus in the Main Deck, and the relevant Xyz Monsters in the Extra Deck, such as K9 – #17 “Ripper”, N.As.H. Knight.

A combo opening with K9 – #66a Jokull and a Level 5 Monster Card is as follow:

  1. K9 – #66a Jokull ② effect, Special Summon itself and the Level 5 Monster Card from hand.
  2. K9 – #66a Jokull ③ effect, add K9 – #66b Lantern from deck to hand.
  3. K9 – #66a Jokull + Level 5 Monster Card → K9 – #17 “Ripper”.
  4. K9 – #17 “Ripper” ① effect, detach 1 Xyz Material (K9 – #66a Jokull) as cost, add “Case of K9” from deck to hand.
  5. Activate “Case of K9” ① effect, add K9 – #17 Izuna from deck to hand.
  6. K9 – #66b Lantern ② effect, Special Summon itself from hand and K9 – #66a Jokull from graveyard.
  7. K9 – #66b Lantern ③ effect, add K9 – EW Experimental Liberation from deck to hand.
  8. K9 – #66a Jokull + K9 – #66b LanternN.As.H. Knight.
  9. N.As.H. Knight ② effect, detach 2 Xyz Materials (K9 – #66a Jokull and K9 – #66b Lantern) as cost, attach Number 104: Masquerade from Extra Deck as Xyz Material.
  10. N.As.H. KnightCXyz N.As.Ch. Knight.
  11. CXyz N.As.Ch. Knight ② effect, detach 1 Xyz Material (N.As.H. Knight) as cost, CXyz N.As.Ch. KnightNumber C104: Umbral Horror Masquerade.
  12. Number C104: Umbral Horror Masquerade ① effect, destroy “Case of K9”.
  13. “Case of K9” ③ effect, Set K9 – EX Forced Liberation from deck to Spell & Trap Zone.
  14. Normal Summon K9 – #17 Izuna.
  15. K9 – #17 Izuna ③ effect, send K9 – #ØØ Lupus from deck to graveyard.

During opponent’s turn,

  1. When opponent activates a Monster Effect in hand or graveyard, K9 – #17 “Ripper” ② effect, negate that effect.
  2. K9 – #ØØ Lupus ① effect, Special Summon itself from graveyard.
  3. K9 – #ØØ Lupus ② effect, K9 – #17 Izuna + K9 – #ØØ LupusChronomaly Vimana.
  4. Activate K9 – EX Forced Liberation, K9 – #17 “Ripper”K9 – EX “Werewolf”, then destroy 1 card the opponent controls.

The end board consists of 5 disruptions:

  • K9 – #17 “Ripper” negates 1 Monster Effect that activates in the hand or graveyard.
  • Number C104: Umbral Horror Masquerade negates 1 opponent’s Monster Effect, send 1 random card from opponent’s hand to graveyard, and halve opponent’s Life Points.
  • Chronomaly Vimana negates 1 Monster Effect.
  • K9 – EX Forced Liberation destroys 1 opponent’s card.
  • K9 – EX “Werewolf” looks at opponent’s hand and banish 1 card from it face-up until the End Phase.

Dark Ruler No More in the Side Deck is mainly against Yummy as their disruptions are frontloaded in their monsters on the field.

Uchitake (うちたけ) went 7-1 and finished 2nd in “1st Fuwadora Cup 3v3 Team Tournament” which had 38 teams (114 participants).

K9 Crystron

K9 and Crystron has an interesting synergy that allows them to bridge into each other, creating a powerful cohesive strategy that complements each other. K9 could bring out an early K9 – #17 “Ripper” to negate the opponent’s Nibiru, the Primal Being, before committing to the Crystron combo.

When hit by the opponent’s Maxx “C” or Mulcharmy Fuwalos, K9 Crystron could just play out the K9 gameplan, ending on K9 – #17 “Ripper” and then using K9 – #17 Izuna and K9 – #ØØ Lupus to Xyz Summon N.As.H. Knight or Chronomaly Vimana on the opponent’s turn. If the opponent has no response, then K9 Crystron would just play out the full combo. K9 provides a decent floor for the deck to pass on, while Crystron provides a high ceiling end board.

A combo opening with K9 – #66a Jokull and Crystron Sulfador is as follow:

  1. K9 – #66a Jokull ② effect, Special Summon itself and Crystron Sulfador from hand.
  2. Crystron Sulfador ② effect, send Crystron Sulfefnir and Crystron Thystvern from deck to graveyard.
  3. K9 – #66a Jokull ③ effect, add K9 – #17 Izuna from deck to hand.

Shiyue (十月) finished 1st in “Gewu Card Club Ranking Tournament” which had 35 participants.

Conclusion

The early OCG 2025.04 format is dominated by themes from the Deck Build Packs. Maliss from Deck-Build Pack: Crossover Breakers is still a top contender, while Dragon Tail, Yummy and K9 from Deck-Build Pack: Justice Hunters have shown respectable results in the competitive scene.

Effect Veiler and Infinite Impermanence have low impact against the top decks in the current metagame, and many builds have dropped them altogether. Dragon Tail are mostly graveyard effects, while Maliss and Yummy have extenders that allows them to play through a single Monster Effect negation. Players are switching up to running other ‘hand traps’ such as Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion or the K9 package.

April also marks the start of the World Championship Qualifier 2025, and right off the bat we have China Mainland WCQ 2025 Guangzhou Regional Qualifier in the upcoming weekend.
