Ryzeal
The introduction of the Mulcharmy together with Maxx “C” has changed the OCG metagame to one where the floor of the deck is much more important than the ceiling. Ryzeal has one of the highest floor. When hit by Maxx “C” or Mulcharmy, Ryzeal could simply end on Ryzeal Detonator, giving opponent the minimal draws to setup 2 – 3 disruptions.
Ryzeal’s opening setup is not unbreakable, Ryzeal Detonator could often be cleared with Ultimate Slayer or Metaltronus. But Ryzeal strength is that its 1-card setup is able to trade for multiple cards against the opponent, and they would be overwhelmed on the next turn when Ryzeal puts up the same board again with ease. Ryzeal also has an insanely high consistency as many of its monster could fetch each other, and they function as both starters and extenders.
Ext Ryzeal is also Ryzeal’s strongest weapon. When going first, Ext Ryzeal could send Eclipse Twins from the Extra Deck to the graveyard, which Ryzeal Detonator could then attached to itself as Xyz Material, allowing Ryzeal Detonator to Special Summon itself when Eclipse Twins is sent to the graveyard. When going second, Ext Ryzeal could send Mereologic Aggregatorfrom the Extra Deck to the graveyard, which would then negate the effect of a card on the field.
OCG 2024.10 → OCG 2025.01 Limit Regulation changes:
- Ext Ryzeal 3 → 1
- Abyss Dweller 3 → 0
Having Ext Ryzeal limited is a big blow to Ryzeal. Losing Ext Ryzeal meant that Ryzeal could only perform the opening setup once, and would need to recycle Ext Ryzeal with Ryzeal Cross to have a follow up on the next turn. By negating Ryzeal Duo Drive to prevent access to Ryzeal Cross, Ryzeal would have difficulty mounting a follow up on the next turn.
Having Abyss Dweller forbidden is also another blow to Ryzeal. Abyss Dweller provides Ryzeal an easy solution against decks that rely on graveyard effects.
Maliss
Maliss has one of the highest ceiling in the OCG 2024.10 format. It could setup an early Apollousa, Bow of the Goddess, before ending with Knightmare Gryphon or Firewall Dragon Darkfluid – Neo Tempest Terahertz. This would be backed with a Set Maliss <C> GWC-06 to Special Summon Maliss <Q> White Binder, whose effect would banish Maliss monsters from the graveyard, allowing them to be Special Summoned from banished and generating massive card advantage.
However, Maliss comes with consistency issue and sometimes find itself being stopped by a single disruption. The Maliss monsters are mainly starters, and the extenders are the Bystial monsters, Maliss in Underground, Gold Sarcophagus and Allure of Darkness, so there are chances of drawing too many starters with no extenders.
Game 2 and Game 3 after Side Decking is also an uphill battle as Maliss now has to face the likes of Artifact Lancea and Chaos Hunter.
OCG 2024.10 → OCG 2025.01 Limit Regulation changes:
- Gold Sarcophagus 2 → 1
- Allure of Darkness 3 → 1
The limitation of Gold Sarcophagus and Allure of Darkness reduces the amount of extenders that Maliss could run, lowering their consistency.
Conclusion
Ryzeal had absolute dominating performance in the OCG 2024.10 format, holding onto the first spot for the full 13 weeks. Ryzeal also achieved 2.5 times more top placements than the second spot deck Maliss.
