Yu-Gi-Oh! Asia Championship 2017 Singapore Winter Qualifier was held on 11 December 2016 and had 111 participants.

Metagame Breakdown

The OCG 2016.10 format is heavily dominated by Zoodiac.

Despite having the largest showing, Zoodiac performed below expectation – just 7 made the Top 16.

On the other hand, Eidolon Beast went above expectation with 5 making the Top 16. The Artifact Windwitch Eidolon Beast build in particular performed exceptionally well – only 5 players were piloting the deck and 3 of them made the Top 16.

3 Lawnmowing Infernoid and 1 Artifact Bujin made up the rest of the Top 16.

Progressing through the Single-Elimination stage, more Zoodiac were eliminated from the tournament.

The last Zoodiac and the last Infernoid were both taken out at the semifinal, leaving us with 2 Artifact Windwitch Eidolon Beast to play out a mirror match in the final.

With his Artifact Windwitch Eidolon Beast deck, Clarence Foo went 10-0 to win the tournament and earned his invitation to the Asia Championship 2017.

It was a hard-earned victory for Clarence, having to defeat the 2011 and 2012 Asia Champion, Soh Jun Yuan, in the quarterfinal match, and then the 2014 Asia Champion, Calvin Ang, in the final match.

  1. Is solemn strike not good right now?

    • Akira says:

Solemn Strike is still quite decent, but Dimensional Barrier and Artifact Sanctum into Artifact Scythe are much more effective against the current OCG metagame.

How he summon the Purgatorio? ‘-‘

    • Akira says:

Eidolon Summoning Magic allows you to banish monsters from either player’s graveyard when summoning an Eidolon Beast Fusion Monster. Purgatorio the Eidolon Beast is useful against Infernoid.

  7. does ocg infernoid decks prefer to go first or second?

    • Akira says:

Generally Infernoid would prefer to go second, but those that are running the Zoodiac engine might prefer to go first.

It also depends on the matchup – Infernoid would want to go first if the opponent has the ability to setup some kind of Spell negation effect. For example Eidolon Beast can bring out Merkabah.

  8. leronde says:

how calvin summon the tierra from his extra deck?

    • Akira says:

One of the typical Infernoid play is activating Void Madness to special summon 2 Infernoid Decatron and 1 Infernoid Sjette. The 2 Decatron would then trigger to copy the name and effect of Infernoid Onuncu and Infernoid Devyaty.

This is a strong setup by Infernoid that can negate a Monster Effect, negate a Spell/Trap card or effect, and banish a card in opponent’s graveyard.

Super Polymerization allows you to use all 3 Infernoids to fusion summon Infernoid Tierra, and thus effectively breaking out of that soft lock.
