OCG 2017.01 Metagame Report #3

Welcome to Week #3 of the OCG 2017.01 format.

The release of Maximum Crisis saw the debut of True Draco which swiftly took over the competitive scene.

This report will tabulate 41 top-performing decks from 7 tournaments that were held in Japan, China, Malaysia and Thailand during 14 – 15 January 2017.

Edit: True Draco Zoodiac decks have been properly re-classified under Zoodiac.
Edit 2: True Draco Zoodiac are now known as Master Peace Zoodiac.

  • Maximum Crisis

Metagame Breakdown

  • 16 Zoodiac (8 Kaiju, 4 Master Peace variant)
  • 15 True Draco (12 Zoodiac variant)
  • 10 Others:
    • 3 Zoodiac Invoked (1 Artifact, 1 Kaiju variant)
    • 2 Zoodiac Infernoid (1 Lawnmowing variant)
    • 2 Zoodiac Magician
    • 1 Lawnmowing Zoodiac Lightsworn
    • 1 Lawnmowing Zoodiac Predaplant Shiranui
    • 1 Zoodiac Kozmo

Zoodiac

Kaiju Zoodiac has a remote chance against Master Peace since they run Kaiju in their Main Deck.

Besides Kaiju, players are using Abyss Dweller, Cosmic Cyclone and Mask of Restrict against True Draco.

Master Peace Zoodiac is an alternative build that has been putting in some rather good performance.

The deck focus on the core of Zoodiac, but mixes in some Dragonic Diagram and True Draco Continuous Spell/Trap Cards to take advantage of Master Peace.

With 3 Elemental Triangle of the Zoodiac, 3 Dragonic Diagram and 3 Terraforming, the deck has 9 cards to trigger Baobaboon.

True Draco

Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King is the most oppressive monster in the current metagame.

Being an Advance Summon (Tribute Summon) monster, Maxx “C” and Dimensional Barrier are ineffectual against it.

It could become unaffected by Dark Hole, Interrupted Kaiju Slumber, Torrential Tribute and Solemn Strike if the respective Continuous Spell/Trap Cards cards were used in the Advance Summon.

Imperial Order and Vanity’s Emptiness are now one-sided effects against your opponent since you could simply tribute them away to summon a True Draco.

The most reliable method to take out Master Peace is using Kaiju.

Conclusion

True Draco is still in its infancy build but has been very promising so far.

Based on the current trend, I am of the opinion that True Draco Zoodiac will be the upcoming deck to beat.

Perhaps the deck should be called Master Peace Zoodiac.

  1. The True Draco deck that you posted is more a Zoodiac than True Draco, so it would count for Zoodiacs as a True Draco variant.

    • Akira says:

I was thinking about that too, but in a matchup against that deck, you would side in cards to beat Master Peace, rather than against Zoodiac. Despite having a lower True Draco count, the threat which Master Peace poses is so significant that it has become the defining factor of the deck.

As such, I considered it as a True Draco. Though I agree that it’s debatable.

    • Akira says:

I stand corrected. After further consideration, I agree that the decks that were just splashing Master Peace should be classified as a True Draco variant. I have made the appropriate changes.

I hope to see Maximum Crisis’s recent release show a surge of more Magician themed decks…

  3. Chazzanova says:

Can you guys talk about Zoodiac Ram becoming viable for the deck? It’s an option that wasn’t used until MACR happened.

    • Katsura Kotarou says:

Revival and Apocalypse are the two Draco traps that target and destroy, so Ram kinda give Drancia the protection she needs. Besides, and in my opinion you need to play the maximum Zoodiac count specially in Mono Zoodiac even if they were vanillas, what matters the most is the name, because any Zoodiac = Bullhorn/Drancia/Molmorat.

    • It’s for the Zoodiac Lyca combo that enables them to summon a third XYZ in addition to the standard 2 XYZ play
