ABC had a slow start as players were still testing around with the Galaxy Soldier and Transmodify build. Although opening with Cyber Dragon Infinity could win the game sometimes, but more often than not, Galaxy Soldier and Transmodify bricks when you open with only 1 Level 4 monster.
ABC’s domination truly begun when players switched over to the Rank 4 variant with Photon Thrasher. By focusing on Rank 4, ABC gained much more consistency through having quick access to Bujintei Tsukuyomi and Gear Gigant X.
Gear Gigant X can fetch Ally of Justice Cycle Reader for the Blue-Eyes matchup.
Photon Thrasher forces Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin to bounce preemptively by attacking. It then can be special summoned again in Main Phase 2 for some Rank 4 shenanigans.
While Metalfoes was doing decent in the OCG 2016.04 format, the new additions in Invasion of Venom gave them a strong boost.
Raremetalfoes Bismagia brings even more consistency to the deck, while Fullmetalfoes Fusion and Fullmetalfoes Alkahest allows the Metalfoes player to react on opponent’s turn.
The real star of the deck is Metalfoes Mythriel. Her ability to return Metalfoes cards, namely Metalfoes Combination and Metalfoes Counter, to the deck creates a complete loop for Metalfoes to cycle out with their Pendulum Effect.
- Cyber-Stein – 3 → 1
- Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin – 3 → 1
Limiting Majespecter Unicorn – Kirin was quite a hit to Metalfoes, reducing its consistency to open with Kirin, and the flexibility of having a low scale.
D/D had a strong start by taking 3 out of 4 invitations during the Japanese World Championship Qualifiers 2016.
As the format shift towards ABC and Metalfoes, D/D switched to the D/D Savant Thomas build for easy access to D/D/D Duo-Dawn King Kali Yuga.
D/D/D Duo-Dawn King Kali Yuga is devastating to Metalfoes – wiping their scales when they attempt rebuild on the next turn.
- D/D Lamia – 3 → 2
- D/D Swirl Slime – 3 → 2
Semi-limiting both D/D Lamia and D/D Swirl Slime is a big hit to D/D’s consistency.
Sato Kai, who qualified for the World Championship 2016 with D/D, has found success in the OCG 2016.10 format by running a full playset of D/D Savant Copernicus in the Thomas build. (Sato Kai’s D/D Deck)
It’s ironic that Seto Kaiba’s favourite Blue-Eyes has been dethroned by his very own ABC.
Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon does little to slow down ABC’s strategy, but ABC could easily fetch Ally of Justice Cycle Reader through Gear Gigant X to setback Blue-Eyes.
However, Blue-Eyes remained relevant by preying on Metalfoes. Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon limits Metalfoes’ Pendulum Summon to 1 monster, and Dragon Spirit of White actively disrupts Metalfoes’ strategy by banishing their Spell/Trap.
Although Blue-Eyes was untouched by the 2016.10 Forbidden and Limited List, it struggles to remain competitive with the sharp increase in ABC and the decrease in Metalfoes.
ABC continues to dominate in the OCG 2016.10 format, but the second seat remains a close fight between Metalfoes and Kozmo.
